Sunscreen Confusion? Here’s What You Really Need to Know About SPF Right Now

There’s been so much chatter about sunscreen lately, and as a beauty therapist who works with mature women every day, I wanted to take a moment to help clear the air.
I’m Yvonne, and I’ve been proudly looking after the skin of women in Toronto and across Lake Macquarie for years. One thing I always remind my beautiful clients of is that daily SPF is a must. But just as important as using sunscreen… is knowing what’s in it.
What’s Changed?
Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) recently reviewed three ingredients still found in many chemical sunscreens:
- Oxybenzone (also called Benzophenone-3)
- Homosalate
- Benzophenone, a by-product of Octocrylene
Emerging animal studies are raising some red flags. These ingredients may act as endocrine disruptors, which means they could potentially interfere with our hormones when used in high concentrations over time. The TGA is now proposing new regulations around sunscreen safety, particularly for products used daily and over long periods (like many of us do).
Most brands have already phased out Oxybenzone, which was banned in several countries for damaging our precious reefs. But Homosalate and Octocrylene are still hiding in many sunscreens on the shelf.
How to Check What’s In Your SPF
If you're not already using a mineral sunscreen, now’s the perfect time to flip that bottle over and check. Look under “Active Ingredients” or the INCI list. If you see Homosalate or Octocrylene, it might be time to rethink your choice.
Homosalate has been linked to hormone disruption, and Octocrylene can break down into Benzophenone, a substance that’s been classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans.
Why I Recommend Mother SPF and Found My Skin SPF
In my salon, I only offer skincare products I truly believe in—products that support healthy, glowing skin and are safe for long-term use. That’s why I stock Mother SPF and Found My Skin SPF.
Both are:
💛 Mineral-only formulas use non-nano zinc oxide as their active ingredient, offering broad-spectrum protection without chemical UV filters.
💛 Cruelty-free – no animal testing, ever.
💛 Clean and kind – no Homosalate, Octocrylene, and nothing questionable.
💛 Made in Australia – formulated for our harsh sun and ideal for sensitive, mature skin.
These are the SPFs I wear personally, and they work beautifully under makeup, too—there is no pilling or greasiness.
Not Sure Where to Start?
I know sunscreen can feel confusing, especially when trying to make the best choice for your skin and health. That’s why I’m always here to help.
Pop into the salon for a chat. If you're unsure about your current SPF, bring it, and I’ll help you understand it. If Mother or Found My Skin isn’t quite right for your skin type, I’ll even recommend another clean option.
Because protecting your skin shouldn’t come with compromises—just confidence.
With care and honesty,
